“I feel like my main goal is to encourage students to express themselves. If they can do so accurately and fluently, that’s great, but the most important thing to me, the thing that feels rewarding, is when students show how insightful they are, and when they are able to say things I didn’t expect them to say.”

Hometown: Portland, Oregon, U.S.A.

Jacob attended Portland State University and has been teaching at Joy since April 2014. His prior teaching experiences include teaching adults in a community setting for a year-and-a-half. Jacob’s hobbies are playing video games, reading comic books, bike riding, studying Chinese, and discovering and experiencing new kinds of Chinese food.

OVERALL EXPERIENCE: I’m quite fond of the kids I meet at Joy School; how nice they are, and how happy they are to see me. I’m also thankful for how much I’ve been welcomed by my branch to date.

WORKING WITH CHINESE TEACHERS/OTHER FOREIGN TEACHERS: It’s easy to work with coworkers, Chinese and foreign; we all have the same goal: to help our students succeed.

LIFE IN CHINA: As a foreigner, I’m thankful for the quality of life I’m able to enjoy because it is not very expensive to live here. Sometimes cultural difference make day-to-day life a little difficult but still I enjoy it here very much.
