“I like to focus on simplicity and confidence. The purpose of a conversation is to understand and be understood. If your message comes across clearly, the next step would be to iron out the details of structure and grammar. If one is corrected before having a change to express their thoughts, they may become rattled and not want to finish their sentence.

Hometown: West Covina, California, U.S.A.

Jon went to California State Polytechnic University, Pomona and has been teaching at Joy since February 2011. His prior teaching experience includes teaching at Villas Royal Foreign Language School in Dongguan, Guangdong, China. His hobbies include playing tennis, video games, and traveling.

OVERALL EXPERIENCE: If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life. Meeting children who are excited to come to class and observing their progress from simple greetings to complex conversations makes coming to work easy.

WORKING WITH CHINESE TEACHERS/OTHER FOREIGN TEACHERS: Joy coworkers experience a special comradery usually between family or close friends. Someone to eat/chat with or help with projects (from planning classes to planning vacations) have come along before I even had the chance to ask.

LIFE IN CHINA: Luoyang is much colder and hotter than my hometown. The local supermarkets don’t carry many foreign products I hold near and dear, but Taobao has me covered for everything else I need. As for the city life and transportation, I enjoy being able to get around by bicycle and bus. I do not miss LA traffic.
