I have a deep love for my mother-tongue and I’m excited to share that love with the students at Joy! I was raised near San Francisco by British parents. Learning German as a child, French as a teenager, and Dutch as an adult has given me an understanding of some of the joys and frustrations of being a foreign language student.

Working at a children’s theatre gave me experience with young kids and the energy they have. A job as a teaching assistant at the University of Groningen (in the Netherlands) saw me in charge of a classroom for the first time, and planning my own lessons. I also taught beginner’s Dutch classes to adults before leaving for China.

In my first month at Joy, I have been repeatedly impressed by the students, especially by how quickly they pick up new ideas and how well they express their sense of humour despite a limited vocabulary!

One of my favourite things to do in a lesson is bringing props to class. I feel that language learning can sometimes be quite abstract, but props make communicating in English a matter of hands-on, practical reality. Teaching is about helping the students to see connections, and showing them that learning a language isn’t just about correct grammar; it’s also about culture, communication and having fun together!
